name ol this holy day, Lammas, is a corruption Loafmass — a feast of thanksgiving for the first its of the harvest, annually observed in England aL the beginning of August. Bread made of the new wheat was offered at mass on this day, and was solemnly blessed; and hence, in many parts of England, tenants were bound to bring in new wheat of the year to their lords, on or before the ist August.
The blessing of new fruits was performed annually in the Eastern and Western Churches on the ist, and sometimes on the 6th of August. It is mentioned on the latter day in the Sacramentary of S. Gregory.
In the 5th cent, a church was dedicated to S. Peter ad Vincula on the Esquiline hill at Rome, on this day ; and
