Via orationis

From the simple prayer of the faithful to the official prayer of the Church

Personal prayer begins with faith, adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and petition. It reaches its objective order in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and in the canonical hours of the Roman Breviary. The library therefore places short household forms beside the corresponding liturgical books.

How to establish a daily rule

Begin with five minutes in the morning and evening. Add the Angelus, Rosary, spiritual reading and one canonical hour only after the first rule has become stable.

Vocal and mental prayer

Vocal prayer gives objective words to faith; mental prayer attends to the mysteries signified. The Rosary, psalms and hymns unite both forms.

Distractions and dryness

Return quietly to the words or mystery without agitation. Fidelity, reverence and a renewed intention are more important than sensible consolation.

Private devotion and liturgy

Private prayer should lead toward the Mass, sacraments, Church year and Divine Office rather than becoming a separate spiritual system.
