Martyrological notice
At Damasco, the birth- day of St. John Damascene, renowned for his sanctity and learning, who constantly opposed himself, both by word and writing, against Leo Isauricus, in defence of holy images; for which cause having his right hand cut off by the command of the said emperor, and devoutly commending himself to our blessed Lady before an image of hers, which he had defended, forthwith received the same again sound and whole.

|ggp|ra|j,AINT EVODIUS or EUODIAS, to whom S. I^i Paul the Apostle sends greeting in his Epistle to the Philippians, was the first bishop of Antioch after S. Peter, as S. Ignatius tells us, consecrated to it by the apostles themselves. He is supposed to have suffered martyrdom, but it is very uncertain as to when, and by what manner of death he was called to glorify God ’ and indeed it is very questionable whether there is any authority for regarding him as a martyr.
1 Roman Martyrology. Mentioned Acts xiii. 1. Nothing more is known of him; by some he is called bishop of Cyrene, by others bishop of Olympias, by others bishop of Laodicea ; but none have any authority for so styling him.
