Nilammon

At Gerisf in Egypt, of St. Nilammon, anchoret, who whilst he was carrying f Gera. to a bishopric against his will, in prayer gave up his soul to God.

WHO being chosen bishop of Geres, and finding the patriarch Theophilus deaf to his tears and excuses, prayed that God would rather take him out of the world than permit him to be consecrated bishop of the place, for which he was intended. His prayer was heard, for he died before he had finished it.[1] His name occurs in the modern Roman Martyrology on this day. See Sozomen, Hist. l. 8, c. 19.
Biographical overview
St. Nilammon was an Egyptian hermit of Pelusium. It is believed that he was appointed Bishop of Geres, which he refused. He then locked himself in his cell. Nilammon would die praying with scores of people, pleading for him to reconsider his decision, standing outside his cell. His feast day is June 6. St. Nilammon is one of the 140 Colonnade saints which adorn St. Peter's Square.
